The effect of sloshing damper models on structural vibration control performance

Submission overview

Abstract

Low-damped and wind-sensitive structures can lead to excessive response vibrations. Passive dampers, such as Tuned Sloshing Dampers (TSDs), represent an alternative to supplemental damping for mitigating large structural vibrations. Sloshing models are used to reproduce the physical behaviour of sloshing characteristics, varying from simplified to complex models. High-fidelity assessment of the sloshing effect is attained through the use of CFD models, while a computationally cheaper alternative can be derived through metamodels. To assess the performance of sloshing dampers in low-damped structures, coupled analysis is sought for dynamically excited structures with TSD. The objective of this study is to examine the effect of different sloshing damper models in structural response mitigation by using rectangular tanks with rigid walls, partially filled with water. This study can serve researchers and practitioners within the framework of pre-design estimation of TSD.
