Submission overview
Abstract
This paper introduces a novel acoustic floating floor system capable of delivering exception-ally high levels of vibration isolation while accommodating the highest load-bearing capaci-ty yet implemented in a real-world construction application. The principal innovation lies in the development of an acoustic isolator exhibiting an adaptive stiffness response, whereby stiffness increases as imposed load rises. This behaviour enhances structural performance, limits in-service deflections, and mitigates the risk of overload or mechanical failure without compromising acoustic isolation. The system performance was evaluated using a rigorous three-stage validation framework comprising theoretical design approach, laboratory-scale testing, and in-situ measurements. This multi-level approach confirms both the reliability of the design methodology and the robustness of the system performance under controlled and operational conditions. Additionally, the paper demonstrates the benefits of an integrated structural, acoustic, and sustainability-led design process. Compared with conventional acoustic floating floor systems, the presented solution achieves a reduction exceeding 250,000 kg of embodied CO₂ within the case study through material optimization. The case study establishes a new benchmark in acoustic floating floor design, extending current limits in structural loading, acoustic effectiveness, and environmental responsibility.
