From Compact Harvesters to Bladeless Wind Turbines: Energy Harvesting Through VIV
This talk will focus on two fundamentally different flow-induced vibration mechanisms that are actively exploited for wind-energy harvesting: vortex-induced vibration and galloping. Both can generate large-amplitude oscillatory responses, although they arise from different fluid–structure interaction mechanisms. The presentation will consider how these mechanisms are used in compact energy-harvesting devices, with particular attention to practical challenges such as cut-in wind speed, sensitivity to cross-sectional shape, efficiency and harvested power. Different geometries and oscillator configurations will be discussed in the context of recent developments in nonlinear dynamics and aeroelastic energy harvesting. The talk will then connect these ideas to bladeless wind turbine systems, focusing on how different design choices influence the dynamic response, operating range and energy-conversion potential. The aim is to outline the dynamical mechanisms, design trade-offs and open questions that inform the comparative study and development of macro-scale energy harvesters.
Short Bio
Dr Yurchenko has been Head of the Dynamics Group at the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research, University of Southampton, since joining the University in 2021. His expertise lies in nonlinear and stochastic dynamics, vibration mitigation, and the mathematical and experimental modelling of complex dynamical systems. He obtained his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, USA. In 2008, he received the Young Scientists Award from the Russian Presidential Council for Science and subsequently became a Full Professor in the Department of Mathematical Sciences at St Petersburg State Polytechnic University. Dr Yurchenko has authored over 200 peer-reviewed publications and has delivered numerous invited and keynote lectures at international conferences. He serves as an Associate Editor of Mechanical Systems and Signal Processing, Communications in Nonlinear Science and Numerical Simulation, and the Journal of Vibration Testing and System Dynamics. He is also a member of the Editorial Board of Probabilistic Engineering Mechanics, the International Journal of Dynamics and Control, Vibrations, and Energies.
