Nonlinear bridge dynamics under human-induced, wind, and seismic excitations: in the honour of Professors Alexander and Macdonald

Abstract

Join us for a special mini-symposium honouring the esteemed legacies of Professor Nicholas Alexander and Professor John Macdonald from the University of Bristol. Professor Alexander was a prominent figure in nonlinear dynamics, focusing on earthquake engineering, bridge engineering, dynamic soil-structure interaction, rocking structures, and low-cost seismic base isolation. Professor Macdonald was renowned for his contributions to structural dynamics, particularly in the aerodynamics of long-span bridges, dynamic cable-deck interaction, and human-induced vibration. Both professors actively engaged with EURODYN conferences throughout their careers. In tribute to their outstanding research, we invite contributions in the area of bridge dynamics, ideally reflecting their impactful work. A partial, though not exhaustive, list of relevant topics includes the following: (i) nonlinear dynamic response of bridges (both new and existing), (ii) seismic base isolation, (iii) dynamic soil-foundation-bridge interaction, (iv) human-induced vibration in pedestrian bridges, (v) aerodynamics of long-span bridges, (vi) nonlinearity effects in cable-stayed bridges, and (vii) dynamic response of bridges subject to high-speed and ultra-high-speed (hyperloop) trains.
