Periodic Structures and Metamaterials

Abstract

The study of the dynamic behavior of periodic structures is a challenging problem which has gained large popularity over the past decades. This includes the analysis of the band gap effect in resonant metamaterials to create engineering systems with optimized vibration levels. In particular, this mini-symposium aims to present recent research on periodic structures, and metamaterials with complex cells such as those encountered in engineering applications. The focus here is on discussing advanced modeling strategies and presenting original experimental results. In the first case, the need of efficient numerical methods is becoming crucial to obtain accurate dynamic responses at affordable computational times. Likewise, it is intended to explore new practical results and industrial applications. Then the topics of the minisymposium include, but are not limited to:

  • Wave-based approaches: wave finite element (WFE) method, plane wave expansion (PWE) method, Bloch mode expansion, energy-based methods, …
  • Nearly periodic structures, parametric changes, uncertainties.
  • Nonlinear periodic structures.
  • Multi-physics systems.
  • Model reduction strategies.
  • Industrial applications.
  • New experimental results.
